Sinopse

This collection brings together a significant part of the production of essays Lorenzo Mammí. One of the most important names in Brazilian cultural criticism, Mammí brings for the first time a representative sample of its output, built over the last thirty years. With two exceptions, one on Fred Astaire, another about boxing, the texts focus on visual arts center. The first six, most comprehensive, feature lines of force of his thought, such as the question of the autonomy of the artwork. In the rest of the book, the broader theoretical concepts are tested in individual artists, e.g. Nuno Ramos, and Jose Paulo Resende. "This, That and the Value Of that," one of the book's opening essays exemplifies the scope of reflection Mamm. The comparison between two pieces, one of Jasper Johns, and the other of Kenneth Noland, leads him to discuss how such similar works can be located in opposing categories: the first modern, the second contemporary."Edges", longer essay of the book and, in part, also unpublished, is a candidate for classic status. The text leads to the hypothesis that, from the 1990's, may have ended the period known as contemporary art, since "there is no necessary relationship, spontaneous, between artistic practices and training of new social subjects." It is no exaggeration to say that the debate about arts in Brazil is raised to a new level with the publication of this book.
