In this magnificent novel, the most classic heteronym the great Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, the Horatian Ricardo Reis, is found again in Lisbon, after a season in Brazil, where self-exiled. The year is 1936. Physician, educated by the Jesuits and royalist, he is a wise man can be content to watch the spectacle of the world, as it says in one of the epigraphs of the book. Here, however, he is confronted with the events of 1936 in Portugal and abroad; the one hand, the fascist dictatorship of Salazar; the other, pregnancy of the Second World War, the French Popular Front, the Spanish Civil War, Nazi expansion in Europe. A confrontation, finally, with a world that certainly was not a spectacle.
